How Did Korea Become a "Land of Apartments"?
with Valérie Gelézeau
Residents of Seoul from the early 1960s would hardly recognize their city today. Back then, traditional single-family homes were the norm. Today, the South Korean cityscape is dominated by large apartment complexes (ap'at'? tanji). In Seoul, the total share of apartment in the housing stock jumped from 4% to 53% between 1970 and 2006. During decades of rapid economic growth, mega-sized tanji (megaplexes) drove Seoul's urban frontier outward, and smaller miniplexes quickly transformed marginal neighbourhoods in the 1990s. This rapid change has radically changed South Korea's housing culture, and Korean culture at large.
Geographer Valérie Gelézeau believes that the causes of South Korea's housing shift are cultural as well as demographic and economic. At her talk, Gelézeau will argue that the shift augurs more than a simple response to urban growth, housing problems and land pressure.

China Institute, Corporate Breakfast:
"From Fortune Cookies to Fortune: Understanding Business Culture in China"
8:30-10:30 AM
China Institute 125 East 65 Street, New York
212-744-8181
info@chinainstitute.org
As the world becomes flat, cross-cultural communication may not be as smooth as anticipated. You may be surprised by the fact that no fortune cookies are served in restaurants in China. You may also be one of the majority of managers in Asia who agree that cultural misunderstandings have prevented projects and have hampered business progress. This panel discusses business behaviors rooted in Confucianism and Daoism, explores the concepts of mianzi and guanxi, and elaborates on the "do’s" and "don’ts" that are keys to business success in China.

MoMA
Exhibition: "50 Years of Helvetica"
The Museum of Modern Art
(212) 708-9400
11 West 53 Street
Architecture & Design Galleries
2007 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann’s design Helvetica, the most ubiquitous of all typefaces. Widely considered the official typeface of the twentieth century, Helvetica communicates with simple, well-proportioned letterforms that convey an aesthetic clarity that is at once universal, neutral, and undeniably modern. In honor of the first typeface acquired for MoMA’s collection, the installation presents posters, signage, and other graphic material demonstrating the variety of uses and enduring beauty of this design classic. As a special feature in the exhibition, an excerpt of Gary Hustwit’s documentary Helvetica reveals the typeface as we experience it in an everyday context.
Organized by Christian Larsen, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.

Both are vital the country’s long term economic health. But each is pulling Seoul in a different direction, presenting South Korea’s policymakers with a series of complicated decisions. Thomas J. Byrne will discuss the economic and political forces that are pushing the U.S.– Korea FTA and the Kaesong Industrial Zone to culmination, and those that are working against them. He will also examine what both projects might mean for the North Korean economy, and their potential for becoming the first small steps towards systemic reform.

TAMI STRONACH DANCE. Dance New Amsterdam presents TAMI STRONACH DANCE in an entrancing evening of artistry April 12-15, Thursday through Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 3:00pm. It would be impossible to introduce TAMI STRONACH as having one personality, one background, one world-view, or one artistic talent, and her choreography reflects the same impossibility. Brilliant in her ability to integrate seemingly disparate parts of herself, Stronach’s choreography reflects a similar blend: collages of bodies, movement, art, drama, and design. At DNA, Stronach presents Pinchas the Fish-People and the Great Flood, a mythic retelling of the infamous deluge from the perspective of mermaids. This whimsical dance/theater piece is set to Klezmer music and simultaneously exists on the scale of humans, miniatures and puppets. Also on the program No. Yes, Maybe...can I have some water?, a new work exploring themes of indecision with rigorous dancing, physical theater and nice, juicy slices of narrative. Dance New Amsterdam 280 Broadway (entrance on Chambers) NY 10007. Tickets are $17 general admission, $12 for members. (212) 279-4200 or http://www.dnadance.org

Japan Society, Performance: Benjamin Britten’s "Curlew River"
7:30 pm
Originally a production of Rouen/Haute-Normandie Opera, Normandy, France, this gorgeous opera features an international cast from the UK, France and the U.S. Internationally-aclaimed Paris-based director/actor Yoshi Oida directs with musical director/conductor David Stern, son of Isaac Stern and principal conductor of Opera Fuoco in Paris. Based on the classic noh play Sumidagawa, the incandescent opera Curlew River was composed by 20th-century British composer Benjamin Britten in 1964. The story follows a madwoman mourning the death of her young son who embarks upon a journey to his burial site with a ferryman. Though Britten set his opera in medieval Europe, it draws deeply from the original noh not only in story but also in the austerity of theatrical and musical form.

Re-Presenting Emptiness: Zen & Art in Medieval Japan
9:30 am - 5 pm
P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art,
Princeton University New Jersey
"Re-Presenting Emptiness" attempts to articulate new frames of reference for the artifacts associated with Japanese Zen monastic communities in the medieval period. Bringing together leading scholars in the disciplines of history, literature, religious studies and art history from Japan, Europe and the United States, the symposium provides diverse and interregional perspectives on the little understood objects that mediated relations between Chan/Zen monks and their dharma brethren. Robes, calligraphies, portraits, landscape paintings and poem-picture scrolls are examined in terms of their rhetorical and institutional functions. By offering new possibilities for understanding the formal and representational uses of these objects, the "Zen" of "Zen art" can be removed from the realm of the inscrutable and understood in the context of multiple social realities and historical conditions .Sponsored by the Tang Center, the Department of Art and Archaeology, the Buddhist Studies Workshop, and the East Asian Studies Program, Princeton University, and the Princeton University Art Museum.
Admission is free, but registration is required. To register online, visit http://web.princeton.edu/sites/TangCenter/zenandart/registration.html or call (609) 258-1741.

"UNIQLO: From Tokyo to New York to Global Brand"
Speaker
Nobuo Domae, Chief Executive Officer, UNIQLO USA, Inc.; Executive Vice President, Member of the Board, FAST RETAILING CO., LTD.
Presider
Jotaro Hamada, Managing Director, International Franchise Management, Citigroup Inc.
From its humble beginnings as a single store in Hiroshima in 1984, Fast Retailing Co.'s UNIQLO brand has attracted a large and devoted following through its chain of casual wear stores in Japan's suburban areas in the 1990s and urban areas in the early 2000s. In the United States market, UNIQLO opened three stores in New Jersey shopping malls in 2005. It was the fall 2006 launch of the SoHO flagship store, however, that represented an unprecedented leap for the firm in terms of scale and reach. UNIQLO USA, Inc. CEO Nobuo Domae discusses the firm's U.S. marketing strategies, stressing the goal of true globalization over simple international expansion, including corporate structural and cultural changes. Mr. Domae will also highlight the challenges and successes his company has faced in the highly competitive U.S. casual wear market, with stiff competition coming from department stores and specialty stores such as Gap Inc's various lines, as well as from European brands such as H&M, and ZARA.

Microscopic organisms comprise the vast majority of life on the planet, and yet startlingly little is known about their true diversity and the roles they play in the ecosphere. How much microbial diversity is there on the planet? How does this diversity affect other organisms, both positively and negatively? How should conservation practices take microbial life into account? During the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation's 12th annual symposium, conservation biologists, epidemiologists, environmental engineers, and infectious disease specialists will discuss the vital role of microbes in the sustainability of life, and the importance of including them in conservation planning.

"Meditation As Art--Art As Meditation: Thoughts on the Relationship of Non-Intention to the Creative Process"

Dr. Epstein discusses some of the parallels between art, meditation and therapy and proposes ways in which non-intention, an important aspect of Buddhist thought, can become a discipline that facilitates the creative process. Moderated by Roshi Enkyo O'Hara, Abbot of the Village Zendo of New York City.

FAYE DRISCOLL in her new work Wow Mom Wow. Post modern dance meets pop musical meets death metal fantasy. Through an evening of heartbreak, belly laughs and butt talk an absurdly logical alternate dimension is illuminated. Driscoll, a 2006/2007 Dance Artist In Residence at BAX, seems to be describing our time and simultaneously asking these age-old questions: Who am I? Who are you? and What are we doing here? The answer could be finally found some¬where in Wow Mom, Wow. Driscoll’s refreshing, darkly comic, just-under-the-skin work hits on vulnerable nerves and is delivered in smartly made self-conscious packages. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
"Good Night Alice" Gala Benefit
star studded gala concert & benefit saluting New York's most celebrated venue, Alice Tully Hall.
Cocktails 6:15-7pm
Concert: 7pm
Dinner: 8:45-10:30pm
Audra McDonald, Wynton Marsalis, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, The
Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and the Juilliard Orchestra
conducted by David Robertson are among those performing at concert
hosted by Tom Brokaw in salute of famed Alice Tully Hall as it closes
temporarily for dramatic renovation; dinner to follow performance.
A T.V. broadcast of the concert, “Lincoln Center Special: A Gala Night at Alice Tully Hall” will air nationwide on May 3 on PBS as part of the Live From Lincoln Center series made possible by a major grant from MetLife.
Since it opened in 1969, Alice Tully Hall has been the setting for thousands of stellar events, from Lincoln Center performance debuts and world premieres, to openings and galas including the annual New York Film Festival. Luminaries ranging from Leonard Bernstein to Spike Lee, Sir Harold Pinter to David Byrne , Yo-Yo Ma to Rosie O’Donnell, and Beverly Sills to Clint Eastwood have graced its stage. After nearly 40 years of year-round use, public amenities and theater facilities will receive much-needed upgrades. In addition, aesthetic transformations to the interior and exterior, designed by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro in association with FX Fowle Architects, will create a soaring, three-story, all-glass outer lobby that will welcome patrons with public amenities, including a larger lobby area and expanded food service. The Hall’s auditorium will be transformed with new palettes and finishes and innovative lighting features, including translucent walls that will envelop the audience in a warm glow.
Named for its principal benefactor, the influential arts patron Miss Alice Tully, the elegant 1,100-seat Alice Tully Hall is considered one of New York City’s premier theater venues. It is also among the most comfortable, with particularly generous legroom. This was a feature demanded by the tall Miss Tully so she, and her 6’3” friend Edward Graeffe, could stretch their legs at concerts.
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) serves three primary roles: presenter of superb artistic programming, national leader in arts and education and community relations, and manager of the Lincoln Center campus. As a presenter of more than 400 events annually, LCPA’s programs include American Songbook, Lincoln Center Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and Live From Lincoln Center
